Anyone can post his or her classified ads for free.

BigBenta marketplace is available in both web and mobile access, for the Filipinos, made by Filipinos.

Background

There is no question as to the growth prospect or the inevitable adoption of e-commerce in the Philippines. However, the many barriers currently present in the market have collectively slowed down the rise of this bright new industry from taking off in the Philippines, unlike its neighbors in Asia.

The founders of BigBenta believe the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) will be the foundation of e-commerce in the Philippines and not the large companies. Though the MSME segment presents some challenges, BigBenta understands each and everyone of them and believes that it has the solutions and operational experiences to address them one step at a time, efforts which will eventually translate to its success in the Philippine market.

Hence, BigBenta has developed an approach that defines its current commercial and technical initiatives. Commercial initiatives such as a sales & marketing approach that is customer-driven, responsive, prudent, evolving, and patient in solving customer problems. These attributes are what the market requires at the moment. Technical initiatives such as an in-house and open source platform development, instead of deploying an over-the-counter or an outsourced platform, suited for a local market that needs customized, innovative, and evolving solutions.

Classified Ads

About a year ago, BigBenta launched its Classified Ads service. It was intended to give the local market an alternative to the dominant player as well as build its own presence in the local online market. The market for online classified ads has since intensified among the players, but it has also generated the right interest among the older population, which reinforces the message that Internet will be part of everyone’s life more and more.

Online Store

Around March of 2016, the company launched its online store called “BigBenta Store” where now, close to a hundred merchants have set up their online store and STARTED SELLING to anyone nationwide. BigBenta Store is the manifestation of the company’s belief and support for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME).

The major difference of BigBenta Store from the competitors is it allows the merchants (Storeowners) to create their own online store based on their preferences like items to sell, its varieties (e.g. color, sizes, etc.), inventory level, pricing, PROMOTION rules, payment method, customer management, report management and many more. The online store will soon be equipped with features like chat, abandoned cart management, customer survey, and complaint management that are all designed to put the storeowners in control of their online store and everything that happens in it.

To complete BigBenta Marketplace, the company officially launched its 3rd platform, BigBenta Service Booking this month. In terms of its full range of offerings, BigBenta Marketplace stands as truly one-of-a-kind having three platforms, built to respond to the needs of Filipino customers and entrepreneurs.
Service Bookings

BigBenta Service Bookings allows any skilled individual (a.k.a. Service Provider or SP) to directly offer their services based on their preferred location, time, work scope and rate charges. Likewise, customers can also specify, browse and choose their preferred service provider using a variety of criteria.  Most services offered are blue collar in nature (e.g. plumbers, electrician, tutors, masseuse, beauticians, etc.) while there are also some professional services available like bookkeeping, accountancy, events management, and others.

BigBenta Service Booking was developed to provide additional income to service providers outside their full-time or daytime jobs, while giving them full flexibility based on their available schedule and place of residence. The major difference of BigBenta Service BOOKING COMPARED to competition is its positioning that is geared towards individual service providers rather than service companies or agencies. For the customer, this means that prices are lower, service duration is flexible (e.g. hourly, half-day, whole day, per call, etc.), and scope of services is equally varied. For as long as a service provider can do it, he or she can offer it, in her own terms.

BigBenta Marketplace and its entire service portfolio will soon be available on mobile (Android and iOS). To prevent fraud, fake items and persons with character issues from offering their services in BigBenta Store and BigBenta Service Booking, the company implements an authentication and verification (A&V) process to all its storeowners and service providers on an annual basis. Every product item and service being offered including its purchase and booking are screened and verified by BigBenta’s customer support, all done to protect the customers.

Mulat: A Revelation in Form and Content

Of all the triumphs going for Diane Ventura’s first feature-length film, Mulat (Awaken), its genre-bending narrative style and the ace performances of its actors perhaps take the cake. Chief in this long list are its two lead actors—Jake Cuenca (who plays the morose Jake) and Ryan Eigenmann (who is dynamite as Vince)—both of whom effectively quash any preconceived notions viewers may have of their abilities due to their notoriety in more mass-leaning vehicles. Newcomer Loren Burgos is also not to be shrugged off, and it is her impassioned turn as Sam, in equal doses forceful and vulnerable, which serves as the movie’s anchor. Supporting cast members such as the sparring couple of Logan Goodchild (Logan) and Candy Pangilinan (Cathy), as well as theater mainstay Madeleine Nicolas (Sam’s mom), also deserve kudos.

But let’s not kid ourselves here: Ventura’s material is topnotch, and it is our good fortune that she is adamant in presenting things, well, differently. What in lesser hands will be a straightforward three-way love story gets a shot in the arm with the young director at the helm. What we have instead in Mulat is a psychological thriller, a time-hopping mystery, and a perspective-rich romance rolled into one, where linearity is challenged and logic is refashioned. Some may view it as difficult, but any worthwhile experiment is worth some work. And the critics agree: Mulat is worth laboring over. Since its global debut a while back, Ventura has bagged Best Director for Global Feature, while Jake Cuenca took home Best Actor at the International Film Festival Manhattan 2015. The film also won Best Narrative Feature at the World Cinema Festival in Brazil, where Cuenca once again snagged Best Actor honors. Mulat was also given the “A” rating by the Cinema Evaluation Board.

In retrospect, Diane Ventura’s previous output, the Cherie Gil starrer TheRapist, was a portent of fine things to come. Another psychological vehicle, the short film is yet another triumph in less-is-more craftsmanship, and it approached weighty issues (rape, abuse, sexuality, psychoanalysis) with deft hands. A new trailer for said film, which got a G rating from the MTRCB after initially being deemed unfit for public viewing, will also be shown in local screenings of Mulat.

Meralco announces latest rate reductions, IEC survey results

Meralco, the country’s leading power distribution company, recently announced another rate reduction for its residential subscribers this October 2016. Subscribers will enjoy a 12-centavo rate reduction per kilowatt hour(kWh); for average households with 200 kWh energy consumption per month, this means Php 24.00 off the monthly bill.

Meralco mentioned that the recent rate reduction was caused by lower generation and transmission charges.

This good news comes in the wake of the encouraging results of the latest International Energy Consultants (IEC) Survey. The Australian consulting firm specializing in Asian power markets showed in a recently released survey that lower tariffs for Meralco over the last four years have closed the power-rate gap between Luzon and other countries.

The IEC observed that lower fuel costs have significantly contributed to the lower energy rates that we enjoyed this year. Since August 2016, Meralco has announced lower power rates for its residential subscribers.

Dr. John Morris, the IEC survey’s proponent, also mentioned that a more efficient sourcing strategy by Meralco, lower distribution charges, and lower system loss played major roles in bringing power costs down for Meralco subscribers. Morris noted that Meralco subscribers were able to save a total of P30 billion in energy costsbecause of these three factors.

Thanks for the back-to-back good news, Meralco!

“A” for Apocalypse Child Cinema Evaluation Board hails surfing film as a potential hit

Photo caption: Apocalypse Child cast members Sid Lucero, RK Bagatsing, Ana Abad Santos, Annicka Dolonius, with co-writer

Arkeo Films’ newest production Apocalypse Child continues to receive acclaim as it is the latest Filipino film to receive a grade of A from the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB). The grade entitles the movie, which opens in cinemas on October 26, to get a 100-percent tax rebate.

Apocalypse Child tells the story of Baler-based surfing instructor Ford (played by Sid Lucero) who is supposed to be the son of a famous American director. One summer, this often-told tale comes to fore as the instructor’s childhood friend Rich, now Congressman of Baler (played by RK Bagatsing), has pulled strings for the director to acknowledge Ford. Chona (Ana Abad Santos), the mother of Ford, is ecstatic. This development comes at a time when Rich is engaged to be married to Serena (Gwen Zamora), and Sid has a romantic affair with a young Fil-Am tourist Fiona (Annicka Dolonius).

The Cinema Evaluation Board’s summation noted the excellence of the ensemble cast. The CEB said, “Aside from Lucero, also a standout was Gwen Zamora, leagues away from her ‘Bubble Gang’ persona as she evokes a simmering sexiness… The support was also very good, from RK Bagatsing… to Ana Abad Santos as Frod’s mom… to Annicka Dolonius and Archie Alemania in their respective depictions of wasted but still hopeful youth.”

The Board hailed the film’s production values. It described the editing as “sufficiently contained,” the cinematography as “imaginative,” and  the music by Armi Millare of the band Up Dharma Down as “apt as it captured well the melancholic surf vibe.” The CEB praised the production design by artist Christina Dy for maximizing the scenic locale “to the hilt.”

The members of the CEB also gave kudos to director-writer Mario Cornejo and co-writer-producer Monster Jimenez. The summation made a reference to the duo’s previous work, the 2005 Cinemalaya film “Big Time,” when it stated, “It is films like (Apocalypse Child) that remind us that there is always a fresh way of telling a story, and like the director’s maiden project with Monster Jimenez, Big Time, it is a potential sleeper and helps keep the indie spirit alive.”

Apocalypse Child is distributed by Solar Pictures. The movie is supported by Belo Sun Expert. For updates, like the Apocalypse ChildFacebook page and check out website apocalypsechild.com.

EastWest introduces 5-Year Floating Interest Rate Time Deposit

EastWest Bank expands its term deposit offerings with the launch of EastWest 5-Year Floating Interest Rate Time Deposit, a long-term deposit instrument with quarterly interest repricing.  Unlike with regular time deposits with fixed interest rate and interest earnings paid at maturity, depositors could benefit from rate upswings and quarterly crediting of interest earnings with EastWest’s new TD product.
A depositor parking funds in a plain vanilla time deposit account will earn a fixed rate throughout the duration of the term.  With EastWest 5-Year Floating Interest Rate Time Deposit, interest is repriced quarterly based on the one-month weighted average accepted yield of the Term Deposit Auction Facility of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas; as such, interest earnings will be higher if the applicable interest rate for the next quarter goes up, and vice versa.  And if the deposit is maintained to full term, this 5-Year TD product is exempted from withholding tax. In case of pre-termination, a new interest rate per quarter will be applied retroactively to the principal amount according to the number of years the account has been maintained, and will be subject to applicable charges.
The product suits long term investors who prefer getting their interest income regularly for the things that they need to spend for now, while keeping their principal intact for future use.  Interest earnings are paid-out quarterly to the depositor’s EastWest checking or savings account so there is regular income stream.

A P5-million placement, for example, will be paid upwards of P30,000 in quarterly interest earnings at current rates, which the depositor can already enjoy on the first quarter of the five-year term.
EastWest 5-Year Floating Interest Rate Time Deposit is available at all EastWest stores.  Minimum placement is P100,000.  For more details, visit www.eastwestbanker.com.
